FAQs

There are a million LIS student blogs out there--why one more?

I feel there are still gaps to be filled, and I'd love to offer my own view on the library field. I am currently a student in one of only two of California's ALA accredited library schools--San Jose State University's SLIS program. I'm also the first person in my family to go away to college, and I feel that that is a beautiful thing.
My blog will feature my own journey through the required classes in my program as well as news in the library field, specifically news concerning Chicano literacy and scholarship.

What is it like to be a LIS student?

I dunno, but I hope you'll find out here as the weeks go by!

How can I best prepare for library school?

There as many kinds of students as there are people, but here is what I am doing. Although I don't start classes for another three months, I've ordered the books for my first semester and have started reading them. I figure if I read them now, take recap notes on each chapter, each week of assignments won't feel so unfamiliar and daunting. I'll already be familiar with the coursework ahead of schedule. I've also familiarized myself with the applications we'll be using in class, such as Blackboard Collaborate, D2L (Desire 2 Learn), Second Life, etc. And don't be shy when it comes to networking and contacting the folks in the department with any questions. Although I'm very shy in person, emailing my questions never feels very hard!

What other degree/s do you have?

I have a B.A. and an M.A. in the Humanities from San Francisco State University.

What is your top challenge in successfully completing the MLIS program?

I have two little challenges that are my top priority--a kindergartner and a preschooler. Needless to say, they spend a lot of time at the library!

Ever actually worked in a library?

Yep. I've worked as a full time supervisor at three bay area universities, and on a temporary basis for two law libraries. Loved every minute of it! (well, pretty much.)

Any other interests?

Where to begin? Wierd stuff, like abandoned building photography, those terrible ghost hunter shows, Victorian and British Lit, modern Indian literature, folk music, dubstep, cooking, gardening, the smell of books, the light-as-air feel of my Kindle, fitness.

Oh, and I sell stuff on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/happymamidesigns?ref=pr_shop_more
